Creativity and Making Art

Do you ever resist the thing that you know you were created to do? Let's take a look at;

Romans 7:15 "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do."

Yup. I plead guilty. I know I'm supposed to be sitting in the studio right now making music yet somehow I found myself lost on the internet looking at peoples profiles I don't want to look at and not accomplishing my goals, so here I am learning to take my own advice that has worked well in the past and hopefully help you on your own creative journey.

First things first. Journal.

Where is your heart at?

If you don't know, journal to God and let Him journal back to you, even for 5 mins and then work your way up to 25 mins. Make this a discipline every day. Buy a productivity journal. I use the pomodoro technique where I turn my internet off, put my phone on airplane mode and do 1 specific task for 25 mins, like journaling.

Write out all your dreams and goals to help you get a clearer picture of where you want to be creative in your life. Maybe it's painting a picture for someone or simply painting your toenails, we are all creative and we are all artists so even the simple things are filled with much beauty.

Plan to be creative.

Set aside time out of your week to be intentional about your art. There was a season where I would wake up every morning extra early to sing and practice guitar for 30 mins to an hour before I went to my day job. It set me up in the best mood for my day and I've since then increased my musicianship immensely. Which leads to my next point.

Do what you love.

When you do what you love, you come alive and that's exactly what this world needs is for more people to come alive.

"For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed" Romans 8:19

To me what I get out of this verse is that we were created to be fearless. When we live fearlessly, perfect love casts out all fear and perfect love is here with us now, since Jesus so we have the power by the Holy Spirit given to us to tune our ears to heaven which will silence the voices of doubt, cynicism and perfection and allow us to do what we love for the audience of one.

Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Wow, so you are free to use your gifts and make awesome art.

That unique gift that you have, no one else can use it exactly like how you will so have fun, be brave and get to making art. Whether it's architecture, writing, sewing, designing socks or making mermaid toast, the world is your oyster.

Surround yourself with a like-minded community that believes in you and where you can glean off one another. Collaborate and discuss what your challenges are and seek in helping others who are behind you and stay humble by asking for help from those who have traveled before.

What if you feel stuck? That's okay.

We will all go through valleys and mountain tops, don't try to rush through the process, every moment is an opportunity for divine inspiration and wonder with every breathe you breathe so keep your eyes open, stay connected, disciplined and whatever sparks your imagination follow that yellow brick road. Take note of your accomplishments and keep educating yourself of your favorite artists.

Learn something new and try to incorporate that into your art.

Go to shows, exhibits or watch ted talks. Study those who went before you and see how they did it.

Work hard, set new goals and stay unreasonably optimistic and watch your dreams unfold.
